A.L.S. by K.O. Peppiatt to a Mr Beale, dated 16 June 1919, congratulating him on being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. On Bank of England headed paper, endorsed C.C.O., 11.2 x 17.8cm. Pinholes at top left, two folds and a few fox marks, otherwise undamaged (£30-50)

Kenneth Oswald Peppiatt (1893-1983), chief cashier at the Bank of England 1934-49. It is thought that the recipient of the note, a Company Sergeant Major in World War I, was the father of Percival Spencer Beale (1906-81), Peppiatt’s successor at the Bank from 1949-55
