A.L.S. by John Singleton Copley, Baron Lyndhurst, Lord Chancellor, to J.C. Herries. Datelined “George Street 5 Jan 1828,” it responds to Herries’ protest at the proposed appointment of Lord Althorp as chairman of the new finance committee nominated to enquire into the public revenue. Althorp’s subsequent appointment led to the quarrel between Herries and Huskisson which brought down the Goderich government on 28 January 1828. 18.8 x 23.4cm (double). A few folds, clean and an important letter (£150-200)

John Singleton Copley, Baron Lyndhurst (1772-1863), Attorney General 1824-6, served as Lord Chancellor three times between 1827 and 1846. Called to the Bar in 1804, he is perhaps best known for his role as prosecuting counsel at the trial of Queen Caroline in 1820. John Charles Spencer, Viscount Althorp (1782-1845)
