William Muir Knox Marshall was commissioned into the Gordon Highlanders, and served with them as a Captain in South Africa during the Boer War (entitled to the Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Laing’s Nek, and Belfast; and the King’s South Africa Medal with two clasps). Whilst in South Africa he served briefly on the panel of judges at the trial of Lieutenant Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant, in what was the most celebrated court martial of the Boer War.

Marshall subsequently served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 August 1914, and for his services with the British Expeditionary Force he was Mentioned in Despatches (
London Gazette 17 February 1915), and was appointed a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour ‘for gallantry during the operations between 21 and 30 August 1914’ (London Gazette 3 November 1914). Advanced Major, he died in Sandwich, Kent, in 1939.
