Richard Henerai Teddy was born in Taupo, New Zealand in 1927. He served in Japan between 1946 and 1948 as a Private with J Force - the New Zealand forces that were allocated to the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) which occupied Japan following the end of the Second World War. He next attested for service with the New Zealand Army at Papakura on 17 April 1952 giving his last occupation as Truck Driver with the N.Z. State Forest Service, Murapara. He embarked from New Zealand for overseas service on 28 July 1952 and served with the 16th New Zealand Field Regiment in Korea in the rank of Gunner from August 1952 to March 1954. He was promoted to Bombardier on 21 March 1954, returned to New Zealand on 17 April 1954 and was discharged on 18 June 1954.
