John Ryder Rendle was born at Devonport on 27 April 1879, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 13 August 1894. He joined the Armoured cruiser H.M.S. Aurora on 16 February 1899, and served in her during the Boxer Rebellion, being present at the Relief of Pekin. He was advanced Able Seaman on 7 February 1901, and was discharged, time expired, on 26 April 1909.
