Pair: Petty Officer 1st Class D. Morgan, Royal Navy

South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (”Shah” D. Morgan. Leadg. Sean. H.M.S.); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Danl. Morgan, Bosn’s Mte. H.M.S. Stork.) impressed naming, light pitting and contact marks, very fine and better (2) £600-£800

Daniel Morgan was born in Castle Haven, co. Cork, on 18 October 1854, the son of Daniel Morgan, H.M. Coastguard. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 16 April 1870, and having joined H.M.S. Shah as an Able Seaman on 14 August 1876, was promoted Leading Seaman on 1 June 1878. He served in her during the South African War, before joining H.M.S. Iris as a Petty Officer 2nd Class on 1 November 1879. Promoted Petty Officer 1st Class on 1 January 1880, he served in her during the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 (Medal and Khedive’s Star).

Morgan joined H.M.S.
Stork on 22 January 1883, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 19 November 1886. He was appointed Acting Chief Gunner in H.M.S. Colossus in September 1890, and was shore pensioned on 22 October 1892. He subsequently joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 31 August 1901, before being discharged on 18 October 1904 on his 50th birthday.
