R.); Defence Medal, mounted as worn; together with a small Appreciation Medal, gold (9ct.), the obverse engraved ‘Sedgefield to Sergt. F. Salt. M.M. 19th. Frederick William Salt was born in Hull on 17 November 1886, and attested for the Suffolk Regiment. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 July 1915, and subsequently with the Battalion in Salonika, and for his services in the latter theatre of War he was awarded the Military Medal. He was discharged to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 8 May 1919.

Following the outbreak of the Second World War Salt joined the Home Guard, and served with the 8th Battalion, Shropshire Home Guard, based in Bridgnorth, being awarded the British Empire Medal in 1944. He died in Hull on 19 December 1970.
