John Strickland attested for the Border Regiment at Ambleside, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 26 July 1915. He subsequently transferred to the East Lancashire Regiment, was advanced Sergeant, and was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion.
