Arthur Ingham was born in Burnley in 1895, the son of Jonas Ingham, a sub postmaster and shopkeeper. A postman in civilian life, he enlisted in the 6th T.A. battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment on 11 December 1915 and embarked for Mesopotamia in July 1916. He spent the duration of the War in this Theatre and was discharged in 1919. On discharge he immediately re-enlisted in Basra for a further 4 years service, serving in India and Jamaica, before finally being discharged in 1923. Returning to the UK, he re-joined the Post Office in 1924. Upon the outbreak of the Second War Ingham re-enlisted, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, serving in Africa from December 1942 until May 1944. Discharged in 1946, he immediately re-enlisted in the Royal Engineers Postal Section, and served with them in Germany and the U.K. until 1952, when he finally left the Army. On returning to civilian life Ingham re-joined the Post Office, and was employed as a postman in Norwich, being awarded the Imperial Service Medal upon his retirement in 1957 (London Gazette 17 December 1957). He died in 1961 at the age of 66.
