A Great War 1917 ‘Ypres’ M.M. group of three awarded to Private C. Moran, 40th Australian Infantry Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, for his repeated gallantry as a runner, he was also twice wounded during the war

Military Medal, G.V.R. (231 Pte C. Moran. 40/Aust: Inf:); British War and Victory Medals (231 Pte. C. Moran. 40-Bn. A.I.F.) mounted for display, generally very fine or better (3) £600-£800

M.M. London Gazette 4 February 1918. The original recommendation states:

‘On 12th October 1917, east of Ypres, he displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This man acted as a runner and he had to carry messages through the barrage zone. He was several times severely shaken, but kept on. On the morning of the 13th, he went into no man’s land where he worked five hours in full enemy observation, assisting to bring in wounded.’

Claude Moran was born in Geeveston, Tasmania, Australia in 1893. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, 2 March 1916. Moran served with the 40th Australian Infantry Battalion in the French theatre of war from November 1916. He was wounded in action, 7 June 1917 and 28 March 1918.
