John Brough Girling was born in London on 27 July 1896, and enlisted as a Rifleman in the County of London Regiment, being posted to the 21st battalion on 2 September 1914. Promoted Corporal soon after, he was Commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment on 22 April 1915. Embarking for the British Expeditionary Force in July 1915, he was posted to the 4th Battalion a month later. Invalided home in January 1916, he was posted overseas again in August 1916, this time with the 2nd Battalion. However in November 1916, he was wounded and again invalided home.

Promoted Lieutenant on 22 January 1917, Girling was seconded for service with the Indian Army in November 1917 and attached to the 2/12 Pioneers, seeing service in the North West Frontier campaign of 1919. Promoted Captain on 22 January 1920, he was posted to the 10 Royal Jat’s in October 1921 but retired from the Army the following year. Having been appointed to the Army Reserve, he was recalled to service in August 1939 and joined the Green Howards Depot.

Girling was appointed Acting Lieutenant-Colonel in 1942, and spent the first five years of the War on Staff duties in the UK. On 15 July 1945, he emplaned for South East Asia Command, and served at Headquarters. Taken on strength of Far East Land Force on November 1947, he relinquished his Commission again on 28 September 1949, but on 14 April 1941 was granted a Short Service Commission as a Major and was posted to the Yorkshire and Northumberland Training Centre. Posted to Kure, Japan as Permanent President of Courts Martial in August 1951, he seems to have served in this capacity during the Korean War. He finally relinquished his Commission on 2 June 1955, having been re-granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
