William Boyles/Boyels was born in Dunster, Somerset. He attested for the Madras Infantry at Exeter in August 1850, and arrived in India for service with the 1st Battalion, Madras Fusiliers the following year. Boyles served with the Regiment during the Pegu operations of 1852, and during the Indian Mutiny. He volunteered for service with the British Army, when the Regiment was absorbed as 102nd Foot in 1861. Boyles was discharged, 10 May 1870, having served 22 years and 276 days with the Colours. In later life he resided in Taunton.
