Alfred Ernest Cocks was born at Devonport on 7 June 1872, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 7 June 1887. He was advanced Able Seaman on 1 April 1892, Leading Seaman on 10 August 1896, Petty Officer 2nd Class on 11 April 1897, and Petty Officer 1st Class on 22 February 1900. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, whilst based at H.M.S. Vivid on 15 June 1905, and was shore pensioned on 6 June 1912, whilst holding the rate of Acting Chief Petty Officer.

Cocks joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 14 July 1912, and was mobilised as Chief Petty Officer on 27 August 1914. He joined the auxiliary patrol yacht H.M.S.
Hecate on 1 January 1915, and served in her for the remainder of the Great War, being awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his gallantry in action with enemy submarines in St. George’s Channel on 4 May 1918. He was finally demobilised on 18 February 1919.
