Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., wide suspension (J. Broughton Capt. Aft. Gd. H.M.S. Jason. 24 Yrs.) engraved naming, extremely fine £500-£700

John Broughton was born at Kingsand, Cornwall, on 27 April 1819, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy on 20 June 1835. He served in H.M.S. Stag from 31 January 1836 to 8 November 1839; H.M.S. Crocodile from 22 March 1842 to 26 July 1843; H.M.S. Fox from 24 October 1843 to 5 August 1848; H.M.S. Amazon from 31 October 1848 to 11 May 1852, in which ship he was advanced Captain of the Afterguard; H.M.S. Termagent from 27 September 1852 to 5 January 1853; H.M.S. Leopard from 6 January 1853 to 1 August 1856; H.M.S. Satellite from 14 August 1856 to 26 January 1861; H.M.S. Nile from 27 January to 27 September 1861; and H.M.S. Jason from 28 September 1861 to 3 December 1864. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 26 November 1864, after 24 years’ man service (having had a two and a half year break between service in Stag and Crocodile, and was discharged to pension the following month.
