Thomas Colbert was born in Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland. He attested for the 4th Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers at Tralee in January 1884. Colbert transferred to the 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry in September 1884. He was discharged, 11 January 1896.
