Alan Kerr Charlton was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on 2 November 1940, and served with them throughout the Second World War, being promoted Lieutenant on 2 May 1942, and Captain and temporary Major on 30 October 1945. He saw further service in post-War Palestine as A.P.M. of the 1st Armoured Division, before transferring to the Royal Military Police on 11 July 1953. He served with the Royal Military Police in Kenya during the Mau Mau uprising, before retiring on 18 December 1960.
Note: Although the recipient’s General Service Medal for Palestine 1945-48 gives his unit as the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, the Regiment was not present in Palestine, with the exception of a few officers seconded to various Headquarters’ posts.
