James Hills was born at Ford, Northumberland. He joined the Northumberland Fencibles in 1795, the 26th Regiment, the 5th Garrison Battalion and finally the 32nd Regiment in June 1810. At Waterloo he was wounded in the right thumb and left thigh. He was discharged in May 1817 as a result of a contracted thumb from wounds received at Waterloo.
