James Lindsay served during the Great War with the Royal Army Medical Corps in the French theatre of war from 13 July 1915. Lindsay served with the 51st Field Ambulance and was attached to the 8th (Service) Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment for both of the above awards. The Battalion served as part of the 51st Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division on the Somme, July - November 1916.
