John Owin was born in the Parish of Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire. He enlisted into the Royal Horse Artillery on 3 July 1803, aged 22, and served in Major Ramsay’s “H” Troop R.H.A. at Waterloo. He was discharged with a pension in 1819 due to a pectoral complaint.
