George Haberfield was born in Bristol on 19 January 1873, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 20 August 1898. He joined H.M.S. Terrible on 16 September 1899, was promoted Stoker on 16 November 1899, and served with the Naval Brigade during the operations in South Africa, and subsequently saw service in China. He was advanced Stoker Petty Officer on 18 September 1908, but was reduced to Stoker 1st Class on 5 August 1910. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Cornflower, and was shore pensioned on 1 March 1921.
