Arthur Samuel Rogers was born in Sedgley, Staffordshire, on 5 October 1878, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 5 October 1893. Advanced Able Seaman on 17 September 1898, he joined H.M.S. Wallaroo on 22 February 1900, and served in her during the Boxer Rebellion. He transferred to H.M.S. Duke of Edinburgh on 15 March 1910, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 25 October 1911. His service record additionally notes that he ‘rendered good service at the wreck of S.S. Delhi in December 1911’. Rogers served throughout the Great War at H.M.S. Neptune, and was demobilised on 20 February 1919.
