Henry Frank Shairp was educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant on the Unattached List on 5 August 1896. He joined the Indian Staff Corps on 25 November 1897, and was promoted Lieutenant on 5 November 1898. He served with the 3rd Madras Light Infantry in China during the Boxer Rebellion, and was advanced Captain, 79th Carnatic Infantry, on 5 August 1905.
