James Frederick Edwards was born in Fulham, London, in 1894 and joined the Royal Berkshire Hussars on 4 May 1915. He served with them as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the Great War in Egypt from 22 October 1915, and was wounded in action at the Second Battle of Gaza on 19 April 1917. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps on 21 September 1917, and subsequently to the Royal Air Force as a Fitter, and was discharged in April 1919.
