India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Perak (227. Pte. G. Haines. 80/Ft) minor edge bruising, good very fine £500-£600

George Haines was born in Birmingham in 1850, and attested there for the 80th Foot on 20 February 1874. He served with the Regiment during the Perak operations from 27 November 1874 to 20 March 1876, and subsequently in South Africa, where he took part in the Sekukuni campaign on 1878, and the Zulu War in 1879 (entitled to medal with clasp 1877-8-9). He was killed in action at the battle of Intombi River on 12 March 1879, one of 61 men of the Regiment killed in action that day, and is commemorated on the Staffordshire Volunteers Regimental Memorial in Lichfield Cathedral, Staffordshire.
