India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Kachin Hills 1892-93 (2115. Sergt. G. Deane 2nd. Bn. P.W.O. Yorkshire Regt.) number, rank, and initial officially corrected, nearly very fine, scarce £600-£800

Approximately 112 Kachin Hills 1892-93 clasps awarded to the Regiment.

George Deane was born in Soho, London, in 1868, and joined the Yorkshire Regiment at Scarborough, Yorkshire, on 13 January 1887. Posted to the 2nd Battalion, he was promoted Corporal on 24 July 1889, before proceeding to India in H.M.S. Euphrates, landing in India on 28 January 1890. Promoted Sergeant on 9 November 1892, he served with the Battalion in Burma from 22 November of that year, and was present in the operations in the Kachin Hills, 3 December 1892 to 3 March 1893, before returning home on 15 November 1894. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 21 November 1894, and was discharged on 12 January 1899, after 12 years’ service.

Sold with copied service records and medal roll extracts. The medal roll erroneously gives his rank as Private, whereas his service papers clearly state that he had been promoted Sergeant (and had not been reduced in the ranks in any way); this discrepancy presumably explains why the rank on his medal has been officially corrected.
