Four: Chief Gunner’s Mate J. Hutton, Royal Navy

Crimea 1854-56, no clasp, unnamed as issued; Baltic 1854-55, unnamed as issued; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Jas. Hutton Chf. Grs. Mte. H.M.S. Excellent 22 Yrs.) engraved naming; Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue, unnamed as issued, pierced with ring suspension, the Long Service medal a scarce ‘year on edge’ variety, edge bruising and light contact marks, very fine (4) £400-£500

James Hutton was born in Hastings, Sussex, on 2 July 1838, and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 17 April 1851. He joined H.M.S. Vengeance on 31 August 1852, and served in her during the Crimea operations of 1854. Advanced Ordinary Seaman on 1 March 1855, he transferred to H.M.S. Volage on 27 April of that year, and served in her during the Baltic operations of 1855. Advanced Chief Gunner’s Mate on 26 January 1867, he joined H.M.S. Excellent on 28 April 1870, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 22 January 1875. He was discharged to pension on 9 July 1880, having held during his service the rates of Leading Seaman, Yeoman of Signal, Bosun’s Mate, and Chief Gunner’s Mate. He died in Poole, Dorset, on 3 May 1914.
