Five: Petty Officer Stoker Mechanic H. R. Every, Royal Navy

1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star, 1 clasp, France and Germany; Africa Star, 1 clasp, North Africa 1942-43; War Medal 1939-45; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., E.II.R., 1st issue (KX.94459 H. R. Every P.O.S.M. H.M.S. Protector.) light contact marks, very fine (5) £80-£120

Harold Roberts Every was born in Exmouth, Devon, on 1 May 1920, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 20 June 1938. After serving initially in H.M.S. Courageous, he transferred to H.M.S. Furious on 16 May 1939 (only four months before his former ship was sunk), and having been promoted Stoker 1st Class on 20 June 1939 served in her for the first four years of the Second World War.

Advanced Leading Stoker in 1942, Every served in H.M.S.
Ceres during the Normandy landings, before being sent to Ceylon in December 1944 with the rate of Acting Stoker Petty Officer. Following the cessation of hostilities he served in the netlaying ship H.M.S. Protector from 19 April 1951 to 30 September 1953, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 15 June 1953. He was variously rated Petty Officer Stoker Mechanic and Petty Officer Mechanic (Engineer) during the 1950s, and was finally discharged to pension on 19 June 1960.
