Four: Officers’ Cook 2nd Class H. W. Dewell, Royal Navy

1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star, 1 clasp, France and Germany; War Medal 1939-45; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 3rd issue (L.13922 H. W. Dewell. O.C.2. H.M.S. Kellett.) good very fine (4) £70-£90

Harry William Dewell was born in Deal, Kent, on 12 April 1901, and joined the Royal Navy as an Officers’ Cook 5th Class on 11 August 1921. Advanced Officers’ Cook 2nd Class on 13 September 1924, he served in H.M.S. Kellett, an 800-ton surveying ship, from 26 March to 5 December 1935, and again from 4 March to 3 December 1936, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 20 August 1936.

Dewell served during the Second World War in the patrol vessel H.M.S.
Shearwater, based at the shore base H.M.S. Badger, and towards the end of the War was attached to two Naval Parties, NP1503 and NP1747. These were set up to occupy French ports after they had been recaptured, with the first going to Boulogne, and the second to Calais- it is probable that it was his service with these Naval Parties that qualified him for the France and Germany clasp. He was released from the Royal Navy on 14 September 1945.
