Luglar Lavallie was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, on 8 October 1894, and attested there for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 6 January 1915, having previously served in the 27th Light Horse. He served initially with the Canadian Army Service Corps during the Great War on the Western Front from 19 March 1916, before transferring to the 28th (Saskatchewan) Battalion, Canadian Infantry, and was discharged at Regina on 19 February 1919.
