Thomas Spiers was born in Kilbrachan, Renfrewshire, and attested for the 58th Brigade in February 1875. He was posted to the 72nd Highlanders in November 1876, and served with the Regiment in Afghanistan 1878-80 (entitled to Medal with four clasps). Spiers was discharged, 26 May 1888, having served 13 years and 92 days.
