George Payne was born in Stogursey, Somerset, and attested for the Coldstream Guards at Taunton. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 September 1914, and was killed in action on 29 October 1914, at the first Battle of Ypres, during which his battalion was virtually annihilated. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Pyres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
