Frederick William Saunders Newland was born in Madras on 14 June 1842, the son of Henry Charles Broderick Newland, a Conductor of Ordnance, and was appointed an Assistant Apothecary in the Indian Subordinate Medical Department. He served during the Abyssinia campaign attached to the Madras Sappers and Miners, landing in Abyssinia on 12 December 1867. Following the cessation of the campaign, he was employed at the Garrison Hospital, Bangalore.
