Q.G.M. London Gazette 17 February 1976.

James Patrick Hardy was serving as a Detective Constable with the Royal Ulster Constabulary at the time of his award. The following detail behind the circumstances of the award of the Q.G.M. to him is added in a newspaper cutting included with the lot:

‘Two policemen who foiled an armed raid on a Belfast bank [22 November 1975] are to receive the Queen’s Gallantry Medal.

They are Detective Sergeant George McMullen [sic], of Tennent Street RUC Station, and Detective Constable James Hardy, of Newtownabbey who spotted the getaway car speeding away from a robbery at the Trustee Savings Bank at Glengormley in November 1974.

They gave chase and followed the robbers’ car along the Ballyclare Road until it eventually crashed into the security fence at the Corr’s Corner Roadhouse.

Sergeant McMullen said:

“When the car stopped four armed men got out and we ordered them to halt. After repeated warnings we drew our pistols and opened fire, hitting and wounding one man. He and one of the others stopped and after a further chase we caught all four.”

More than £1,800 in cash was recovered and the robbers were subsequently brought to trial.

Sergeant McMullen added:

“Of course, we were both delighted when we heard we were to be awarded these medals. I have been with the force for more than 13 years - since I was 18 - and it nice to know that you are appreciated.”

Sold with the following related documents: photograph of recipient with McMullan and respective awards after investiture at Buckingham Palace; several newspaper cuttings; and several photocopies of letters of congratulation.
