Harvey John Beard was born in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire in 1868. He joined the Royal Flying Corps as a 2nd Class Air Mechanic, 24 January 1914, and served with 2 Squadron in France from 12 August 1914 (entitled to clasp). Beard advanced to Sergeant (Fitter Engines) in May 1917, and transferred to the Royal Air Force as Sergeant Mechanic in April the following year. He served with 145 Squadron for the latter part of 1918.

Beard is listed in
A Contemptible Little Flying Corps as being entitled to an I.G.S. 1908-35 with ‘Waziristan 1921-24’ clasp, however, his name is not listed on the published transcription of that medal roll as being entitled to an I.G.S. He advanced to Flight Sergeant, and was awarded the L.S. & G.C. in April 1932.
