Canadian Girl Guides, Cross for Saving Life, silver-gilt, hallmarked ‘Sterling’ (Miss G. Rhys Dist. Capt. Edmonton. Atlt. 23.7.44) together with gilt GG lapel badge, good very fine and scarce £100-£150

Extract from the Edmonton Journal, 24 July 1944:

‘Boy, 13, Is Saved From Electrocution
Gordon Lutz, 13, son of Mrs Adam Lutz, 9701 100A st., was in the Misericordia hospital Monday with severe burns suffered Sunday night when he threw a broom attached to a piece of wire, over a trolley wire at 97 ave. and 100 st. Only quick action by Gwen Reese (sic), 9534 100 st., saved the youngster. She heard other children scream, ran to the boy, and with the aid of one of the children’s jackets, used as an insulator, released the boy’s hand from the wire. Police said the palm of his left hand was burned badly and there was an ‘outlet burn’ on the right arm. Police said the boy had unravelled the wire which holds the broom together and then threw the broom across the trolley wire. Gordon’s father is overseas. The boy’s condition on Monday was said improved.’
