Thomas George Souter was appointed Ensign in the 3rd Foot on 21 May 1832, becoming Lieutenant on 28 January 1844, and Captain on 21 October 1857. He afterwards transferred to the 51st K.O.Y.L.I. and in November 1863 transferred to the Bengal Staff Corps as a District Superintendent of Police, Hissar, Punjab; Major, 21 May 1862. He served in the Buffs in the action of Punniar, 29th December 1843 (Medal), and with the 8th Regiment at the siege of Delhi in 1857, including repulse of sorties on the 14th, 18th and 23rd July; also at the capture of Calpee (Medal with two Clasps) [Hart’s Army List 1865 refers]. At Calpee, Captain Souter was in command of ‘half of the Towanna Horse’.
