The League of the Cross, Blackhill, an engraved silver 6-armed cross by T. & Co, these engraved with shamrocks, central circular engraved medallion, the whole surmounted by a Latin cross and suspension ring, standing Bishop holding crozier, rev. named (Presented to Mr. P. Tumilty by the members of St. Mary’s Branch of the League of the Cross, Blackhill, as a token of esteem for his services as Chairman, December 28th, 1889), hallmarked Birmingham 1889, 78 x 58mm. The League of the Cross was a Catholic total abstinence confraternity founded in London in 1873 by Cardinal Manning to unite Catholics, both clergy and laity, in the warfare against intemperance and thus improve religious, social, and domestic conditions, especially among the working classes
