Charles Adkard was born in Everton in 1881 and enlisted into the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1900. Prior to the Great War he saw active service as a Serjeant in the 1st Battalion in India. During the Great War, as a C.S.M. he was awarded the M.M. and mentioned in despatches. He was presented with the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1920 and discharged in 1921. In 1922 he was commissioned Lieutenant and Quarter Master in the 7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. Adlard left the regiment after 27 years service in 1929 and died at Westerhope in 1944 aged 62 years.
