D.S.M. London Gazette 1 January 1942. ‘For outstanding zeal, patience and cheerfulness, and for setting an example of wholehearted devotion to duty, without which the high tradition of the Royal Navy could not have been upheld.’ Engineman William George Smith was awarded the D.S.M. in the 1942 New Years Honour’s List for his services aboard the Harwich based minesweeper H.M.T. Epine. His prefix ‘LT’ would suggest that he was a pre-war Lowestoft trawlerman.
