A fine Cheetah Squadron Korea group of ten awarded to Major J. Viljoen, South African Air Force

Southern Cross Medal, silver and enamel, the edge officially numbered ‘334’; South African Korea Medal (Maj.); South African Union Medal, with second award bar, the edge officially numbered ‘128’; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals; Africa Service Medal, these last five all officially impressed (P102898 J. Jan Viljoen entered military service in 1930 as a Clerk in the South African Ordnance Department, later becoming a Storeman. He was commissioned in 1941, and transferred to the South African Air Force during the war, as a Stores Officer, becoming a Temporary Major. He served with No. 2 (Cheetah) Squadron, S.A.A.F., during the Korean war. This squadron operated with the U.S. 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing in a close air support role, initially flying F-51D Mustangs, and later converting to F-86 Sabrejets. Only 243 Officers received the South African Korea medal. Sold with copy service records which confirm all Second War medals, and a copy of the roll for the Korean awards.
