William John Limebear was born on 16 January 1895 at Devonport. He entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in July 1913. With the outbreak of the Great War he was aboard the Grand Fleet destroyer depot ship H.M.S. Leander as a Stoker 1st Class. His papers suggest he served aboard the destroyer H.M.S. Success at the time she was wrecked off Fifeness on 27 December 1914. Limebear served aboard the destroyer H.M.S. Goshawk, April - June 1916, and was present at the battle of Jutland, the destroyer forming part of the 1st Destroyer Flotilla of the Grand Fleet. He was pensioned on 20 June 1916 with various medical problems and later was paid a war gratuity. Service on dry land with the Militia followed. Sold with copied Royal Navy service papers.
