John Kimber was born in South Shields in June 1871. He attested at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 14 January 1890 and was posted to the 1st Battalion D.L.I. on 31 January 1890 and transferred to the 2nd Battalion on 22 January 1892. As a Corporal he was transferred to the Reserve in November 1897. Kimber was recalled to the Colours on 9 October 1899 and went with the 1st Battalion to South Africa. He was wounded at Ladysmith on 24 February 1900 and promoted to Serjeant on 20 April 1901. Sold with copied service papers.
