Joseph Crump served in the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry in India before being transferred to the Army Reserve. With the onset of the Boer War he was recalled to the Colours and served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa. He was twice mentioned in despatches, once in General Buller’s despatch of 8 February 1900 after the battle of Vaal Krantz and again in Lord Robert’s despatch of 4 Septemebr 1901. After service in South Africa he returned to the Reserve. With the General Mobilisation for the Great War he joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, entering the Balkan theatre of war on 7 August 1915. He later attained the rank of Colour-Sergeant.
