A rare and interesting Great War period Turkish Flag, 136 cm x 118 cm, of red cotton fabric with sewn-on white cotton Star and Crescent, contemporary ink inscription, Captured in the Bay of Antioch from a Turkish Schooner: July 25th 1915. Major H. P. Fletcher, Mx. Hussars’, retaining the original cord ties, one area of moth holes, but generally good condition throughout, and a rare survival £100-120

Major Herbert Phillips Fletcher, D.S.O., Croix de Guerre, Middlesex Yeomanry and Royal Flying Corps, was an architect prior to the outbreak of the Great War. Between March 1915 and February 1916, he was lent to the French Navy as senior military observer for reconnaissance work in seaplanes from Aden to Gallipoli, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre three times. He was afterwards attached to the R.N.A.S. in the same capacity when they took over this patrol. He was accidentally killed whilst flying on 3 August 1916. Major Fletcher is buried in Hampstead Cemetery, London.
