Royal Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry, a very scarce officer’s helmet circa 1843-60, a tall gilt or brass skull with drooping front and rear peaks of similar metal, these with silver plate metal edging, a two part silver plated frontal ornament displays St Edward’s crown over a large Star of the Order of the Thistle, a plated title band around the lower front is inscribed, ‘Royal Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry’, large special pattern plated side ornaments showing the Star of the Order of the Thistle mounted on discs support graduated chin scales, these with velvet lining, a high brass metal comb bears a falling red horse hair plume, original black leather lining, the upper areas of the skull with considerable cracking and dents, some early solder repairs, three of the graduated chin scales missing, slight wear to all plated areas. £800-1200

This raising of the RMLYC took place in June 1843, the unit being disbanded in 1871. A Midlothian troop was added to the Lothians & Berwickshire Yeomanry upon their formation in 1878.
