Depot Light Cavalry, an extremely fine and rare officer’s 1857 pattern light dragoon shako, the sloping body of ‘beaver’, a dished leather top, stitched leather bracing band and bound leather peak, this inlaid with gold bullion wire decoration, a broad band of scalloped edged gold oak-leaf pattern lace around the top of the body, the two part shako plate comprises a separate gilt crown over a very fine cross pattern silver and gilt ornament, the arms of the cross with hob-nail decoration which is overlaid with a circular pierced gilt Garter Proper enclosing the gilt Royal Crest. A five sided gilt plume holder supports a falling red and white horse hair plume, large gilt rose side ornaments with velvet backed gilt chin chain, a gilt lion’s mask and ring at the rear support the gold cord cap lines, a small blackened metal rose ornament at the rear to carry the chin chain when hooked-up, the internal sweat band and silk lining missing but externally the shako is in near mint condition £1500-2000
