‘Dear Mrs Sylvester,
I am very very sorry, but your poor husband grew gradually weaker & passed away this afternoon. He had made a brave fight against his illness, but he could not go on. His wound in the stomach was too much for him.
He has borne his suffering nobly, & we were all very fond of him. The doctors & nurses did their best & though he died among strangers, he died among friends. May God give you strength to bear your loss as bravely as John bore his suffering.
Yours v. truly
M. A. Bere, Chaplain, C.E.’
