John Byers was born on 15 August 1935 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire and educated at Rutherglen Academy and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He was gazetted to the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers on 29 July 1955 and after a short time at the Regimental Depot, joined the 1st Battalion on 13 September 1955, on their arrival in Northern Ireland. At the time of the Suez crisis, the Regiment was called upon to provide a number of officers for duties with the specially formed Headquarters unit. Byers was one of three R.N.F. officers chosen for these duties and served in Cyprus and Suez in command of a defence platoon at 2 Corps Headquarters from 13 August 1956 to 9 January 1957. He was promoted Lieutenant on 19 February 1958 but died after a short illness on 6 May 1958 at Halton R.A.F. Hospital. Sold with obituary extract from the St. George’s Gazette.
