The Malaya Emergency campaign medal to Lieutenant J. L. C. Fotheringham, Special Air Service Regiment, killed in action in a communist terrorist attack in December 1953

General Service 1918-62
, 1 clasp, Malaya, E.II.R., 1st type (Lt. J. L. C. Fotheringham, S.A.S.) extremely fine £3000-3500

J. L. C. Fotheringham was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, Special Air Service Regiment (Artists Rifles) on 17 March 1951. He received a Regular Army Short Service Commission as Lieutenant on 29 October 1952. He was killed in action on 18 December 1953, at Sungei Telcom, aged 27.

The following extract is taken from
Re-enter the SAS, by Alan Hoe and Eric Morris: ‘The Squadron HQ was based on the Sungei Telcom and in close proximity there was an aboriginal camp. The troop was fully aware that a large party of aborigines was due to arrive in the squadron base area and they were not long into the patrol when they heard the aboriginals “chattering like a tree full of monkeys” heading towards them. They moved off the track to allow the party free passage, making no serious attempt to conceal themselves. They were spotted almost straightaway and immediately came under accurate small arms fire from a group of CTs who had concealed themselves amongst the aborigines. Fotheringham was killed in the first stages of the fire-fight during which the SAS was inhibited by the presence of the aborigines. None of the aborigines was killed, neither were there any reprisals of any sort.’
