Lieutenant-General William George Cochrane landed with the first expedition to Portugal in August 1808, and served in the Peninsula during the campaigns of 1808 to 1812, taking part in the battles of Roleia, Vimiera, Talavera and Busaco, retreat to and occupation of the lines at Torres Vedras, pursuit of Massena on his retreat from the lines, action at Redhina, capture of Campo Mayor, siege of Olivenca, first siege of Badajoz and repulse of the sortie from Fort San Christoval, siege and storming of Ciudad Rodrigo and various minor affairs. He served for nearly two years in Canada during the war in North America, as Aide de Camp to the Governor-General and Commander of the Forces, Lieutenant-General Sir George Prevost. He went on Half-Pay in 1818, and in 1824 he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel and Inspecting Field Officer of the Nova Scotia Militia. He was later Deputy Adjutant-General in Ireland, and Commanding the Dublin District. General Cochrane died at Piccadilly, London, in 1857.
